This community originally grew around the Vedder River Bridge itself with several businesses located there. Before 1926 all traffic to Vancouver passed through this corridor. Today the area straddling Vedder Road from Promontory Road down to the south side of the bridge is considered part of the community which remained largely rural until the 1940’s.
From 1941 through to the 1990’s, the establishment of a major military training base at the intersection with Keith Wilson Road influenced development of the area. Since then this area has undergone major redevelopment with the bases conversion into the Canada Education Park and an award winning modern residential neighbourhood with shops and restaurants which could have been lifted out of urban Vancouver.

As well as a training location for RCMP and Paramedics, the area is now home to the University of the Fraser Valley campus. The Canadian Military Education Centre and the Cenotaph serve as reminders of the areas military roots.
